Since the mid-twentieth century, the
number of Latin Americans living outside their
country has doubled. Women and children are,
according to UN reports, over half of migrants. U.S.
is the main destination and since 90, more towards
Europe, being Spain the second country of preference.
Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and the Caribbean
have the highest number of migrants, with more than
one million people in each case. Argentina, Brazil,
Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Peru, Paraguay
and the Dominican Republic over half a million. |
Today, when the
world is plunged into a deep recession in both
advanced and emerging economies, immigrants suffer
the blow stronger and suffer like anyone else, the
economic crisis: 14% of Latin Americans are without
work in EE. UU., where unemployment is 8.6% while in
Spain is 17.4% and rises to 28.4% in foreign.
Migration is one of the highest importance themes in
the current international scene. Poverty, lack of
opportunity, discrimination and wars, are some of
the reasons that induce people to emigrate.
